What does Ginkgo
Ginkgo biloba extract helps to maintain normal blood circulation and
cardiovascular function, particularly normal blood vessel tone and
elasticity, and normal blood platelet aggregation. Maintenance of normal
blood supply to the brain helps to preserve mental function in the
elderly. Ginkgo biloba extract also has powerful antioxidant activity,
protecting tissues (particularly brain tissue) from free radical induced
Are there adverse effects from taking Ginkgo biloba?
Ginkgo biloba is generally well tolerated, with no significant adverse
effects reported during use; gastrointestinal disturbance or headaches
may occasionally occur in susceptible individuals.
containing Ginkgo biloba extract should be taken with caution by
patients prescribed anti-coagulant drugs (e.g. aspirin, warfarin). The
toxicity of Ginkgo biloba extract is very low.

This improvement in symptoms is comparable to or greater
than that obtained with conventional synthetic drugs such as tacrine,
but without the harmful side effects associated with the latter.

Ginkgo Biloba and antioxidant activity
Antioxidants counter the damaging effects of toxic molecules produced
within the body called free radicals, which have been implicated in a
variety of diseases including Alzheimer's disease.
A study by British
scientists to compare antioxidant activity in 18 Ginkgo biloba brands
has recently been published in the Journal of Alternative and
Complementary Medicine. Antioxidant activity was measured using a
standard laboratory test, and expressed on a per mg ginkgo basis to
enable comparison between tablets of different sizes.
There was a
50-fold difference in activity between the samples, with Pharma Nord
Bio-Biloba having the highest level of antioxidant activity. This
variability can be partly explained by the type of Ginkgo biloba used-
some products are based on dried leaf powder, whilst others use Ginkgo
biloba in a more concentrated (standardised extract) form.
when comparing the latter products, there is still a considerable
variation in antioxidant activity, which presumably must result from
differences in manufacturing processes used by different suppliers.
What is Bio Biloba ?
Ginkgo biloba, also known as the maidenhair tree, is one of the world’s oldest
living tree species. Once widely distributed, this species was almost destroyed
during the last Ice Age in all regions of the world except China, where it has
been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for several thousand years. Leaves of
Ginkgo biloba are used to prepare an extract, the main active ingredients of
which are chemical substances called flavone glycosides and terpene lactones.
The composition of commercially available extracts of Ginkgo biloba may vary;
extracts should be standardized to contain 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene
lactones. Unprocessed leaves should not be used (e.g. in teas), as they contain
chemicals (removed during processing) which can trigger allergic reactions.

LONDON, April 22 /PRNewswire/ --
Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair tree) is widely used for impaired memory, poor

Variability of nutritional supplement quality
In addition to the above study on Ginkgo biloba, recent reports have highlighted
discrepancies in stated active ingredient content for the nutritional
supplements coenzyme Q10 and St John's Wort, which have been shown to be
effective in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and depression
respectively. These reports demonstrate the importance for consumers of
purchasing supplements from manufacturers who can guarantee product content,
quality and activity. All nutritional supplements marketed by Pharma-Nord are
manufactured under pharmaceutical control, which is a guarantee of product
